# CIP-007-6

Cyber Security - System Security Management

## Purpose

> To manage system security by specifying select technical, operational, and procedural requirements in support of protecting BES Cyber Systems against compromise that could lead to misoperation or instability in the Bulk Electric System (BES).

## Sections and Standards

There are five requirements in CIP-007, with applicable requirement parts presented in tables. Below, the contents of each requirement are reproduced below under "Part" and "Requirement." "Product/Feature" indicates which Dispel product helps an organization comply to this requirement, and "Technical Supplement" details how this compliance is achieved.

### Requirement 1

> Each responsible Entity shall implement one or more documented processes that collectively include each of the applicable requirement parts in CIP-007-6 Table R1 - Ports and Services.

#### Table R1 - Ports and Services

| Part | Requirement                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 | Product/Feature         | Technical Supplement                                                                                                                                                                                                    |

| 1.1 | “Where technically feasible, enable only logical network accessible ports that have been determined to be needed by the Responsible Entity, including port ranges or services where needed to handle dynamic ports. If a device has no provision for disabling or restricting logical ports on the device then those ports that are open are deemed needed. | Wicket ESI whitelisting |
Dispel Wicket ESIs allow administrators to whitelist not only IP addresses and ranges, but also specific ports and ranges thereof.

Please see Visual 6A for reference

                        |
| 1.2 | “Protect against the use of unnecessary physical input/output ports used for network connectivity, console commands, or Removable Media.” | Wicket ESI | For customers who want to meet both the spirit and letter of CIP-007-6, Dispel recommends placing a Wicket ESI physically next to the PCI/HMI equipment, and placing all of said equipment into a locked, alarmed cage. |

### Requirement 2

> Each responsible Entity shall implement one or more documented processes that collectively include each of the applicable requirement parts in CIP-007-6 Table R2 - Security Patch Management.

Mitigation plans shall include the Responsible Entity’s planned actions to mitigate vulnerabilities addressed by each security patch and a timeframe to complete these mitigations.

(2.4) “For each mitigation plan created or revised in Part 2.3, implement the plan within the timeframe specified in the plan, unless a revision to the plan or an extension to the timeframe specified in Part 2.3 is approved by the CIP Senior Manager or delegate.
| Cycling virtual components, automated network refreshes, automatic patching and updating | Dispel launches its virtual components with the latest patches each time the network is refreshed (often, at a minimum, daily). For customers that desire support in patching and tracking of underlying assets, Dispel is happy to provide upkeep as a managed service. |

### Requirement 3

If malicious code is detected between periodic refreshes, components can be manually destroyed and replaced from the Admin Console. |
| 3.3 | “For those methods identified in Part 3.1 that use signatures or patterns, have a process for the update of the signatures or patterns. The process must address testing and installing the signatures or patterns. | Traffic log data | In reference to 3.1, if Dispel has embedded a Layer 7 firewall into its network, new patterns are passed to it according to the specifications of the firewall vendor. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.dispel.com/regulatory-framework-mappings/nerc-cip/cip-007-6.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
